Black History Studies presents ‘Overstanding Whiteness as Rightness: Decolonising the African Mind ‘ with Prof Lez Henry on Saturday 21 December 2024.

In this highly, interactive, reasoning, we will explore why overstanding white supremacist thought and action, as ideological weaponry, is crucial to any discussion of the global black experience, where Africans are reduced to the ‘voiceless’ and ‘unthinking’ other. To enable us to do so, we will investigate why the notion of ‘civilisation’ reinforces ‘whiteness as rightness’, through socio-cultural constructs like ‘white allyship’, ‘white saviour syndrome’ and ‘white Christian morality’. All factors that serve only to disaffect, disenfranchise and delude far too many black people, into accepting and embracing myriad forms of inferiority, read as internalised oppression, that are in fact the ‘hidden’ consequences of African Chattel Enslavement. Hence, Europeans have created a world where a global minority controls the way many ‘think’, through the racialisation of knowledge that is fundamentally flawed, because much of what they claim, as ‘truth’, can be easily refuted. Our reasoning will be assisted by considering Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s argument regarding ‘Colonialism as a Process of Alienation’, as well as the thoughts and reflections of other pro-black Africentric voices, that do not ‘tek back nuh taak’. All that is asked is that you bring your mind and make sure it is open.

Dr William ‘Lez’ Henry is the Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology at the University of West London.
