Black History Studies presents the Author Talk and Book Launch of A Country Man’s Journey: Mi Come Yah Fi Work by Mr George Robert Kelly

When Alfred Browns father Emmanuel had an accident in 1929 while working with his friends on a farm in rural Jamaica and died soon after, this impacted greatly on Alfreds life. Using Alfred as the main character, the book charts his journey over a period of sixty years. It deals with some of the social and economic conditions that working class people in rural Jamaica were experiencing in the 1950s and which motivated them to travel to the United Kingdom in search of a better standard of living. The book is steeped in culture, race, class and it shows how these can affect peoples lives. It is authentic and is written from the personal experience of the author intertwined with imagination. The book is intended to be humorous in parts but at the same time addresses some of the serious experiences of Alfreds generation.

This event will take place on Wednesday 12 August 2026 from 18:30 to 20:30.

The event will be held at The Black Cultural Centre Islington, 16–18 Hornsey Road, N7 7BT. Approx 5 mins walk from Holloway Road (Piccadilly Line) tube station. Free on street parking.
