Make History come to life with these Sankofa Sunday ‘Ancient African Kingdoms: From Pharaohs to Empires’ children workshops led by Charmaine Simpson of Black History Studies.

These workshops aim to dispel misconceptions, foster appreciation, and celebrate the rich cultural and historical legacy of Africa. By delving into the origins of human civilization, the great empires, and the diverse contributions of African societies, we can gain a deeper understanding of the continent’s significance in shaping the world we live in today. Let us embark on this enlightening journey together and celebrate the enduring spirit of Africa.

Each workshop will last 1.5 hours from 12:00 to 13:30 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)

The workshops are aimed at young people aged 8 – 16 years old.

These workshops will be online using Zoom webinar. Please ensure that your device can support Zoom.

We like to keep the workshops interactive so ask if you can put your camera on.

The Zoom link will be provided upon registration.

Tickets for each workshop cost £6.00.

In this session, we will explore the contributions of the African continent to the development of human civilisation and uncover the archaeological evidence supporting Africa as the birthplace of humanity.

In this session, we will learn about the wonders of ancient Egyptian civilization and the boy King Tutankhamun.

Session 3: Pharaoh Taharqo & The Empire of Kush – Saturday 11 May 2024 from 12:00 – 13:30 GMT

Taharqo was one of the most prominent pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty of Egypt, also known as the Nubian Dynasty or the Kushite Dynasty. This period marked the rule of Nubian kings over Egypt, and Taharqo played a significant role in the history of both Egypt and Kush.

Let’s delve into the fascinating story of Pharaoh Taharqo and explore the Empire of Kush in more detail.

Session 4: Mansa Musa and The Mali Empire – Saturday 18th May 2024 from 12:00 – 13:30 GMT

In this session, we will learn about Mansa Musa and the powerful empires of Mali which thrived in West Africa.

Session 5: Queen Nzinga & The Kingdom of Kongo – Saturday 25 May 2024 from 12:00 – 13:30 GMT

In this workshop, we will delve into the inspiring story of Queen Nzinga, a visionary leader, and explore the history, culture, and accomplishments of the Kingdom of Kongo in Central Africa. The Kingdom of Kongo, known for its sophisticated governance and cultural vibrancy, left a lasting impact on the region’s history. This workshop aims to shed light on Queen Nzinga’s remarkable leadership and highlight the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom of Kongo.

Session 6: Nana Yaa Asantewaa & The Ashanti Kingdom – Saturday 1 June 2024 from 12:00 – 13:30 GMT

In this workshop, we will delve into the remarkable story of Yaa Asantewaa, a fearless leader and symbol of resistance, and explore the history, culture, and achievements of the Ashanti Kingdom in West Africa. The Ashanti Kingdom, known for its rich cultural heritage and organised society, played a significant role in shaping the region’s history. This workshop aims to highlight the inspiring leadership of Yaa Asantewaa and shed light on the vibrant traditions and contributions of the Ashanti people.
