Magnificas Humanitas and the Long Shadow of Empire: Mission, Memory, and Repair in the Black Church

Sunday 14 June 2026 at 18:00

Speakers: Dr Harvey Kwiyani, Rev Dr Stephen Jennings, Rev Natasha Beckles
Panel Host: Akeem Adagbada

Community Theology at St Nicholas Perivale, in collaboration with Aquila’s House LVPL and Black History Studies, is pleased to host a conversation between three theologians and church leaders exploring the implications of the recent papal document, Magnificas Humanitas, for the Black Church within the Global African diaspora. Situating the document within the wider history of papal teaching—from Dum Diversas and other colonial-era bulls to the present— the discussion will examine questions of mission, memory, justice, repair, and the future of Christian witness in postcolonial contexts.

The conversation will be followed by an interactive Q&A session with participants.

We aim to provide a transformative experience for all attendees, with four key outcomes in mind:

  • Historical Understanding: Participants will gain a deeper understanding of key papal bulls and their role in shaping European expansion, colonialism, and the development of racialised systems within the Atlantic world.
  • Theological Reflection: Participants will engage critically with Magnificas Humanitas and explore its theological vision of human dignity, solidarity, and ecclesial responsibility.
  • Black Christian Perspectives: Participants will reflect on the implications of these histories for Black churches in Britain and the Caribbean and consider how African and Caribbean Christian traditions have navigated the complex relationship between Christianity and empire.
  • Missional Discernment: Participants will explore pathways toward truth-telling, ecclesial accountability, repair, reconciliation, and renewed Christian witness in postcolonial contexts.
