Black History Studies in association with Professor Lez Henry presents ‘Mammification: Reading the Black Female Body as Text in the Popular Imagination.’ (over 16s)

Have you ever wondered why Black females in genres like film generally play mammies, jezebels or sapphires?

Well, in this highly interactive talk, Professor Lez Henry will take you on a journey through Black female representation in popular culture. He will demonstrate how the Black female body has been systematically ‘othered’, dehumanised, subjugated and misrepresented in myriad ways…

All he asks is that you bring your mind and make sure it is open!

Professor William ‘Lez’ Henry is the Professor in Criminology and Sociology at the University of West London. Professor William ‘Lez’ Henry is an international speaker, Social Anthropologist, academic, public speaker and a community activist for over 20 years. The author of a number of books on race, culture, history, music and politics, he is also co-founder of Nu-Beyond Ltd an independent consultancy which focuses on the specialities of education, race, ethnicity, diversity and social, cultural and political empowerment.
