 ‘Black History of Brussels Tour’

Uncovering the Hidden Black History in Brussels, Belgium

Friday 19th April 2024 – Sunday 21st April 2024

This new and exciting tour designed by Black History Study Tours explores the rich heritage of Africans in Brussels, Belgium and their connection to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa. With overnight accommodation included and an expert guide to accompany you, the tour highlights the contributions of the African Diaspora to Belgium society from the 19th century to the present, visiting several historically and culturally significant landmarks and communities in Brussels.

Discover the history of the famous city of Brussels in Belgium which became wealthy due to the colonial exploitation of the area now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo by King Leopold II. 2024 will be the 140th year anniversary of the partitioning of Africa among European countries in the late 19th century; a process historically known as the Scramble for Africa. The Scramble for Africa was the invasion, occupation, colonisation and annexation of African territory by European countries during the period between 1881 and 1914. The Berlin Conference of 1884, which regulated European colonisation and trade in Africa lead to the colonialisation of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Learn about the links of the United Kingdom to Belgium and how the Democratic Republic of the Congo lead to the economic development of Belgium. Learn about the role of Belgium in the assassination of one of Africa’s greatest sons Patrice Lumumba, who would have celebrated his 99th birthday in July 2024 and meet members of the Congolese community living in Brussels today.
