racism

The history of medicine and science is marked by racial injustice and myriad forms of violence: unequal access to health care, the segregation of medical facilities and the exclusion of Black people from medical education are some of the most obvious examples. These, together with inequalities in housing, employment opportunities, wealth, and social service provision, produce disproportionate health disparities by race. This webinar seeks to confront these painful histories of racism in science and medicine that continue to haunt us today.

Black History Studies in association with Maureen Dickson presents a FREE webinar titled ‘Pilots and Soldiers of the Caribbean: Fighting Men of the Caribbean’ on Friday 23rd July 2021.

A speech which was given by King George VI asking for Caribbean men and women to fight for Britain in WWII, ended with the words “His most gracious majesty King George has called on the men of the Empire, men of every class, creed and colour, to come forward to fight. This call is to YOU, YOUNG MAN! Not your neighbour, not your brother, not your cousin, but YOU! 6,000 personnel joined the RAF from the Caribbean, of which 500 were aircrew. Gunners, radio operators, pilots and navigators. The rest were ground crew.

In this webinar, Maureen Dickson will explore and showcase the personal accounts of Veteran’s experiences, showing another side of what was going on during the war, not only in Europe, or the field of battle but in the West Indies. At the event, we will also launch the new book ‘Pilots and Soldiers of the Caribbean: Fighting Men of the Caribbean’ by Maureen M. Dickson.

About the speaker:

Maureen Dickson formally a U.S. Realtor, Property TV Presenter, Producer and Oral Historian. Maureen’s long-standing passion for history took a turn after having a life-changing conversation with her terminally ill father. Although he was too young to go to war in WWII, (in fact he turned eighteen years old weeks before the war came to an end), however, he was able to tell her what life was like in Guyana (British Guiana as it was then known, in South America), during the war years. With this information Maureen decided to look into what role Guyana and the West Indies played during the war. In order to record their personal accounts of the war Maureen interviewed ex-service personnel not only in Britain, but travelled to the West Indies, with the aim that she could preserve their war experiences for posterity. Her hope was that the future generations, would be as inspired as she was, by her father’s account of life in Guyana during the war years, and the people he knew who had gone to war to fight alongside Britain.

Black-Wall-Street-1

This event will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre that took place over 31 May – 1 June 1921. It was the worst race massacre in the history of the United States; however, most people have never heard of it. Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1921, in less than 24 hours the prosperous African-American section of Greenwood, also known as “Black Wall Street,” was completely destroyed. An estimated 300 were killed and over 10,000 people displaced, as a 42 square block area of their homes and businesses were burned to the ground by a white mob that had been deputized by the sheriff.

In this presentation, historian and Financial Educator Charmaine Simpson will shining example of what Black people can accomplish when we pursue our economic goals as a collective. Principles of cooperative economics, wealth building, and Black business development will be addressed, along with the TRUTH about what happened to the people who had their wealth stolen and their story buried for over 100 years.

During the Q&A we will discuss Black Economic Empowerment and Black Wall Street in relation to the Black community in the UK. Black Wall Street is a template for Black Economic Development and Empowerment. Can we resurrect the ideas of Black Wall Street and create our own Black Wall Streets in the 21st and 22nd centuries?

caribbean women

This informative and inspirational presentation tells the story of the hidden contribution of women to the development of Caribbean.

The invisibility of women in the early books on the history of the Caribbean is linked to the fact that some historians felt that women’s issues did not merit inclusion and their contributions were ignored.

It is important to recognise that the study of Black Women’s History makes for a much more inclusive, richer, fuller and more importantly, truthful account of World History.

In this presentation, the topics covered will include the pioneers and writers of Caribbean Women’s History, the contributions and role of the indigenous women of the Caribbean. We will also examine the contributions and role of Caribbean Women during transatlantic enslavement period and the First and Second (“European”) World Wars. Finally, we will look at the involvement of Caribbean Women in Political movements and the organisations that established in the region.
